THE BAXTER MISSION

Where we're going. Where we've been.

Baxter House is a Bowdoin College legend. Anyone making the walk between the Coles Tower and the main campus area will easily recognize the house by its trademark white pillars. The building's journey began early in the early part of the 20th Century, when the Baxter Family constructed a beautiful residence. It served as the epicenter of their lives for many years. The ?white castle? would become home to the Sigma Nu fraternity in 1952, and stayed in the chapter?s hands until it folded in 1968 Later, the college would convert Baxter to a dormitory, and in 1997 it became a College House.

College Houses are charged with continuing the positive momentum of Bowdoin's now defunct Fraternity system. They utilize a similar governance model as the fraternities, and will frequently feature the same volunteerism, and, of course, free-wheeling parties. What is different is an air of inclusivity: all incoming Bowdoin students are tied to a house based on their first-year dorm (or Residential Life assignment). You can check out the College House Constitution, and learn more about the system, by scooting over to theResidential Life website.

Baxter House's mission is to lead the college's charge through this growth period. And yeah, we hear the obvious question:

"How in the hell are you going to do it?"

Simple: FUN. Over the last three years, Baxter Members have participated in hundreds of events with one thing in common: they have been fun as all get out. It's almost a corporate philosophy. You can see a complete list of our activites at the Horse Dog Caf!

Our members party together, live together, and sometimes even love together ... ahem. We're a family just like the first denizens of Baxter House! So look to us for jams like the Stoplight Party, Road War IV, Loose Leaves, and the 3-on-3 Basketball tournament. Come on by and check out our fooseball table, luxurious kitchen, Nintendo 64, and the best beer pong table on campus!
